European Commission handed down a $5 billion fine to Google for anti-competitive behavior

Today, the European Commission handed down a $5 billion fine to Google for anti-competitive behavior, the single biggest antitrust ruling the company has ever faced. The commission’s central complaint is that by requiring Chrome and Google search as default services on any device using the Google Play Store, Android is engaging in anti-competitive behavior. As part of the ruling, Google must stop forcing Chrome and Google search on manufacturers, and stop any efforts to block forked versions of Android. We still don’t know how Google will respond to the ruling — particularly whether it will end up directly charging phone makers for Android licenses — but it’s clearly a major blow to Google and the strategic value of Android as a platform.

Amazon's Jeff Bezos beats Bill Gates in new rich list (BBC}

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is now worth $150bn (£113bn), according to the Bloomberg Billionaire Index. Jeff Bezos's net worth has increased by over $60bn in the last 12 months, which makes him the world's richest man. This places his worth higher than that of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, who has previously topped the rich lists - even at his peak in 1999. Then Mr Gates was worth $100bn - which would be around $149bn today, when adjusted for inflation. Mr Gates is currently in second place with a worth of $95bn, having given away 700 million Microsoft shares and $2.9bn in cash since 1996. He gave the cash and assets to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Bloomberg reports. Amazon websites crash on Prime Day Alexa, are you friends with our kids? Mr Bezos says he is selling about $1bn of Amazon stock every year to fund Blue Origin, the project he has founded to develop commercial space travel. Google Assistant Starts Rolling Out New Visual Experience, Fast Forward, Rewind Voice Controls for All; Google Updates Sign-In Page

Google Assistant is rolling out a new visual overview that will offer proactive suggestions and personalised information for your day. The fresh experience, which is designed to serve information in the form of "visual snapshot" - similar to cards on the dated Google Now, was announced at I/O 2018 back in early May. It is heading to Android and iOS devices in all languages supported by the Google Assistant. In other news, Google has announced a new look for its sign-in page that includes tweaks to the Google logo and centre alignment of all items on the screen. The new sign-in page was first announced last month, however, the search giant delayed its arrival due to "unforeseen delays" and is now rolling out its presence with some minor changes from the original overhaul. With the new visual experience, Google Assistant now provides you with information based on contexts such as the time of day, location, and recent interactions directly on your screen in a proacti

The new Audiokit synth that's completely free for iPad users

Image: AudioKit AudioKit Synth One, a free and open-source iPad synth, is now available for download in the Apple App Store, developer  Matthew Fecher has announced . The Synth One, which Fecher describes as “the largest free and open-source iOS music project in history,” is a professional-level polyphonic synth created by a team of over 100 volunteers over the course of several years. The Synth One is a robust piece of free software, and many of the volunteers involved are professional sound designers and techs who have worked with artists like Neon Trees, Rihanna, M83, and software companies like Valhalla DSP. Right now, it works with audio routing tools Audiobus 3 and Inter-app Audio so you can bring the sounds into other apps like Cubase and GarageBand, but the team says it also  plans to add AUv3 and Ableton Link support  down the road (the ETA on this, however, is unknown). In a video that describes the inspiration behind creating a free, open-source synth, Fecher says,

Google admits it lost out to Microsoft buying GitHub

A Google executive has admitted the search giant lost out on buying GitHub. Speaking at a Fortune Magazine event yesterday, Diane Greene Google’s head of cloud made an interesting admission. “I wouldn’t have minded buying them, but it’s OK,” said Greene,  Bloomberg reports . Previous  rumors suggest  Google was also trying to acquire GitHub, alongside Microsoft’s bids. GitHub founder Chris Wanstrath reportedly chose Microsoft because of his relationship with CEO Satya Nadella. GitHub is a large code repository that has become very popular with developers and companies to host projects, documentation, and code. Apple, Amazon, Facebook, Google, and many other big tech companies use GitHub. There are 85 million repositories hosted on GitHub, and 28 million developers contribute to them. Google earlier this month to comment on whether it will still continue to use GitHub, but a company spokesperson said at the time “We do not comment on ongoing acquisitions across the industry.” F

Tesla Said to Close a Dozen Solar Factories in the US

Electric car maker Tesla's move last week to cut 9 percent of its workforce will sharply downsize the residential solar business it bought two years ago in a controversial $2.6 billion (roughly Rs. 17,600 crores) deal, according to three internal company documents and seven current and former Tesla solar employees. The latest cuts to the division that was once SolarCity - a sales and installation company founded by two cousins of Tesla CEO Elon Musk - include closing about a dozen installation facilities, according to internal company documents, and ending a retail partnership with Home Depot that the current and former employees said generated about half of its sales. About 60 installation facilities remain open, according to an internal company list reviewed by Reuters. An internal company email named 14 facilities slated for closure, but the other list included only 13 of those locations. Tesla declined to comment on which sites it planned to shut down, how many em
